International architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan has completed the design of a new super marina complex, following an international design competition staged by client Lusort, with the project forming a major part of the wider redevelopment of the outer harbor of the award-winning Marina de Vilamoura in Algarve, Portugal. More images and architects’ description after the break.
The practice’s Lisbon-based director Margarida Caldeira said: “The striking canopy seemingly floats over the marina buildings, public space and pedestrian terraces in harmony with the marine environment. It will create an iconic gateway to the renowned marina, and raise the profile of the outer harbor, as well as provide shade for the buildings and public areas during the summer, and protection from the elements in the winter.”
The project has been led by the practice’s Lisbon-based team, currently celebrating its fifteenth year in business, having built up a diverse team of sector experts and long-standing client partnerships, and which has recently spearheaded the practice’s office opening in Sao Paulo.
The scheme includes retail and hospitality space, as well as new headquarters office space for client Lusort and port authorities, workshop space to support the adjacent shipyard, and basement parking for 106 vehicles and landscaped areas.
